I am SICK of people arguing over this! School is for LEARNING NOT SELF-EXPRESSION! Who Cares if there is a dress code! If kids think that the only way they can express themselves in school is with what they are wearing then they need to be taught by there parents that there are other ways in expressing yourself. Music, Art, Drama, Etc. There is NOTHING wrong with kids having to go to school wearing their shirts tucked in, a belt holding their pants up, and dressed NOT looking like they are going clubbing instead of going to school. Grant it, not all kids dress inappopriately at school, but MOST do. Also, if kids are dressed more "alike", not exactly alike but with the same type of clothing on, then people who DO NOT belong on the school campus will be easier to spot which is IMPORTANT for our KIDS SAFETY! That is what is IMPORTANT! SAFETY AND LEARNING! NOT our KIDS SELF-EXPRESSION! When they get into the REAL world of working they will have to have a dress code when they go to work, what is so different with school? That is work and learning! GO DRESS CODES!!!!!!!!!!!

The research is not about self-expression. The research is about examining whether standard school attire has any positive effect on student behavior, discipline, or achievement. The research says it doesn't.

Reason and science should be inherent components of our school system. Irrationality and emotion should not be the basis for educational policy. I urge you to examine the links on the right under "Research Findings" so that you can base your decision on the facts.

I am a parent that is very agianst standard school attire,we can't let them take our children's freedom away. This will only bring about students rebelling, dropping out, skipping, and possibly eating disorders because I don't care how flat your stomach is tucking a shirt in makes you look fat.I see bulemia and anorexia coming around the corner more so due to this. All they need to do is make them not wear pants that show their underwear and no profanity on clothing, and common sense on dresses nothing too short, other than that then they can be free to be themselves and wear the clothes they want to wear instead of turning them into little robot look alikes.I don't care what anyone says clothes will not change grades or their personalities. Our children will be who they are no matter what and forcing this will only anger and upset them.School is hard enough to deal with don't take this away from them.

We students are NOT going to follow a policy created in such terrible conditions as this one. One argument by (I believe, the camera angles on Channel 3 were not always good) Ms. Johnson was that magnet school students believe themselves to be better than non-magnet school students. I will not be called a racist! My family is VERY ethnically diverse, yet here I am being INSULTED because of the color of my skin. I simply will not stand for it.

You can say this argument is about taking kids freedom away. You can say this argument is about bias and poor scientific evidence. I believe people inherently dislike change. No matter how big or how small there will always be half of the group in favor and half opposed, and everyone has to go along with the decisions of the majority. More often then not the changes in question are not bad or wrong, just different. If the clothing doesn't affect the students performance, then why not have a SSA, it is surely not going to hurt. Students will eventually make it to the working world and be forced into uniforms once again, whether it is an apron or a coat and tie, we all have rules to follow. This is just another one. Students, and parents, need to stop worrying about what they are wearing, follow the rules and study hard. Students will have lots of memories from high school, what the wore will not be one of them.

Jacob--I couldn't agree more! There is much discussion about this unfair characterization going on at the MPASS email list. Please join us!

Okay, well I like to make my own decisions while I am learning and when I am not. I am very sorry for those of you that need to be told what to wear. I have a mind of my own and I want to pick what I wear each day. If you want to wear the uniform wear it, but I'm not. Oh, and I don't work at Blockbuster so why look like it?
